Cooper Radio Collective, also known as CRC, merges and fosters the various interests, practices, and perspectives of all Cooper Union students within its development and broadcast through radio.cooper.edu. The collective facilitates 25 to 30 hosts per semester, running from 6pm to midnight every weekday of the school year. Housed at 30 Cooper Square, hosts return weekly to broadcast in the radio room.
CRC shows encourage diversity amongst its listeners and DJs of students, faculty and staff. The Cooper community’s shared interests in enjoying music, conversations, and sound performance on the radio transmits unity, which is often difficult to find due to the scarcity of space and time for gathering on campus. Fall 2023 marked CRC’s first full year of broadcasting, with over 500 hours of recorded material.
CRC’s inaugural exhibition in collaboration with the Cooper Union Archives and Special Collections illustrates the impact of the auditory archive in engaging, nurturing, and preserving collaboration within the Cooper community. Included are documents and ephemera that display the development of Cooper Union’s Audio and Visual department (AVRAC) alongside CRC’s ever-evolving archive. Selected recordings demonstrate learning and sharing through CRC’s radio sentiment via live stream, as well as represent the evolution of AVRAC and the lasting qualities sound can have on community when properly preserved.
