1978. Photograph. Clifford D, From the Cable, p 53.Cooper Union Engineering students have been producing and publishing knowledge for over a century. Now their work is finally accessible to wider world, via a brand new archival finding aid:

School of Engineering theses: https://archives.cooper.edu/repositories/2/resources/28

The School of Engineering theses is a collection of student work in civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and environmental protection dating back to 1909. Theses published between 1909 and 1944 were produced by undergraduates. Theses from 1967 through the present day are graduate work, with the exception of a selection of theses produced for doctorate degrees between 1969 and 1977.

Processing this collection involved taking a deep dive into a mixed bag of physical and digital materials to create an organized catalog of student work. This archival labor was conducted by Ezra Sardes, a senior studying mechanical engineering, who says:

"I really liked how you could tell how inventive Cooper students are. There are some really fun ones in there. Also, in some of the old civil engineering theses, you can see great historical pictures of New York City neighborhoods and infrastructure. Some of those old ones are handwritten! I could not imagine handwriting my entire thesis. It was also interesting to see that Cooper briefly offered a Ph.D. program as well as an environmental science focused program."

We hope you enjoy exploring the theses as much as we have!
