Zines are self-published publications made outside of mainstream press and media, by all kinds of people about all kinds of things. Zines are usually produced in small batches. Often handmade, reproduced on a photocopier, and stapled, but other methods of binding are also used or not used to make zines. The Cooper Union Library's Zine Library was created by Liv Forcey-Rodriguez A'25 in 2022. Since, zines made by the Cooper Union Community have found their way to the poky-dotted shelves.
In the words of the local, collectively-run center for art and activism, ABC NO RIO:
Zines are crucial as alternative sources of information, offering a platform for diverse voices and ideas. Zines have inspired new generations of creators but also serve as a vital resource for contemporary social movements to trace the lineage and evolution of their causes and communities. Preserving zines ensures that these voices and stories remain accessible for future generations.
Check out the Zine Archive at the ABC NO RIO and the Zine Library at the Cooper Union Library!
The Zines Library at the Cooper Union Library embodies the DIY ethos of zine culture—it’s a collection built, shaped, and sustained by the community that uses it.
