RESEARCH IS...

A process of assessment:

re-searching through what you’ve found to determine

what’s superfluous,

what’s missing

& what requires more thought!

RESEARCH TOOLS

EVALUATING SOURCES

The CRAAP test is a handy short-hand for evaluating sources. When considering whether a source is appropriate to use, check the following:

  • Currency - the timeliness of the information
  • Relevance - the importance of the information for your needs
  • Authority - the source of the information
  • Accuracy - the reliability of the information
  • Purpose - the reason the information exists

ORGANIZING RESEARCH

Do your future self a favor! Keep track of your research:

  • Start a document, and whenever you find a source, put it there - whether it's a link to a website, title of a book, etc.
  • Taking notes? Put them in the same document, noting what you were reading/watching when you took them
  • When you sit down to write your paper, viola!, you'll already have a lot of material to work with

CITING RESEARCH

Purdue Owl provides style guides for citation, as well as material on quoting and paraphrasing your research sources, and how to avoid plagiarism: owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/resources.html
