Library FAQ

Why doesn't the library have a Book Drop?

The main reason is to assure that our valuable art, architecture and engineering books do not become damaged in the ensuing pile up and weight of returned books.  The library administrators are considering various options to serve our patrons in this regard.

Why are loan periods only 2 weeks for all non-Cooper patrons?

Our goal is to make our collection materials accessible throughout the semester and not disappear for prolonged spells when they are most needed.  We encourage using system recalls to place holds on books that are currently checked out - this assures that the patrons currently holding the items won't be allowed to renew them.

Why is there a maximum of 2 renewals for Cooper books?

Similarly, our goal is to make our collection materials accessible throughout the semester and not disappear for prolonged spells when they are most needed.  We encourage using system recalls to place holds on books that are currently checked out - this assures that the patrons currently holding the items won't be allowed to renew them.

At what time can I take out a Reserve book overnight?

After 4PM every day during the academic year.

At what times are Overnight Reserve books due back?

At 11AM, Monday through Friday

1PM on Saturday

and 3 PM on Sunday during the academic year.

At what rate do overdue fines accrue?

The library no longer charges daily fines on overdue books.  We do charge $1.00 a day for overdue books that have been recalled, and $1.00 an hour for overdue Reserve books.

What amount in overdue fines can be in my account before I'm unable to check out books?

A total of $5.00 and over in fines at the consortium libraries will block you from checking out items.

There's a $115 fee on my account that wasn't there yesterday. Why?

At 50 days overdue, a book moves to Billed as Lost status.  A $100 replacement charge and $15 processing fee are automatically added to your account.  The $100 amount is adjusted by Cooper Union librarians to the current market cost for the item.  If you return the book, you only need to pay the overdue fines on it, which will not exceed $20 (for a non-recalled, non Reserve book.)
